ARE YOU AWARE YOU ARE LIGHT?

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light” (Eph. 5:8)

As believers in Jesus, when you yielded your life to Jesus, a unique transformation took place in you. You instantly experienced a shift from the dominion of darkness to the kingdom of light (Col. 1:13). Not only that, you also experienced a complete change of status from being an embodiment of darkness to an abode of light. That’s the focal message of our text.

The gift of eternal life you received at salvation is what made you to be a light that darkness couldn’t overcome (John 1:4-5). Now that you’re light, your disposition and conduct must be affected.

What are the implications of your change of status? First, as light, you’re to be a pacesetter. As such, you’re to give direction and take the lead. You are to be the head and not the tail. In other words, you are to demonstrate a unique leadership skill.

Second, as light, you’re to live a life of integrity and truth. Darkness is synonymous with unrighteousness. Light is an expression of holiness and sincerity. You should not partake in the unfruitful works of darkness (Eph. 5:11)

Third, as light, you are expected to live a life of victory. Darkness bows to light, so all demonic activities must be submitted to you. That’s why your light must shine brightly all the time (Isaiah 60:1-2).

Fourth, as light, you’re to give direction to others by spreading the fragrance of the gospel around you. Your light must produce aroma of life: “For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Cor. 2:15). Let your feet be beautiful with the gospel.

Fifth, as light your life must not go into obscurity. Christ is in you, and you’re a city set upon the hill. You must rise from slumber and shake off all constraints that have limited you from maximizing your potential. Your life must count for the kingdom.

As you go from now, let your light shine brightly because you were once darkness, but now you’re light in the Lord.
