The New Testament offers a tremendous roadmap for expected habits for Christian leaders. First, our Lord Jesus is the First or #1 Leader and model for us. We are asked to let His attitude be in us; or in other words, let his habits be our model for life and godliness. The words of Philippians 2:5 come with an introduction of a military imperative “let,” which is indicative of an enforced precept. These words contain the summary of the New Testament attitudinal expectation for any aspiring leader.[1] That is if you must be a leader in the order of our Lord; you must imbibe his habits. Similarly, in his closing summons to the Philippians believers, Apostle Paul presents the mode of thought that must fill the heart of a Christian. Indeed, everything he compressed succinctly into that short paragraph of Philippians 4:8 is pregnant with deep spiritual implication for success in the Christian calling, vocation, and/or leadership. God is never in the habit of parading untested instruments for His assignment. To be used by God in any leadership position, a person must pay the price of character.[2] Therefore, if you do not have a strong and well-respected image: we are not even talking about succeeding yet, you have already made a discrete exclusion of yourself on the level of prequalification for leadership. But if you ever want to be used by God, at all; and to be successfully used for that matter, then, to you I will say it is not too late to fix it. It is always better late than never—they say.
