Insights from the Book
This book is divided into three parts of seventeen (17) chapters. In part one; Myles made anattempt to give a description and definition of vision, the source of true vision and how to overcome obstacles to vision. In part two, he laid bare twelve (12) principles for fulfilling one’s life personal vision. In the third and last part, the author helps us to understand the inherent power of vision. In my opinion, the author’s main concern in this book is how to help the reader understand and appreciate the priority of developing and living with a personal vision. In his words, “the poorest person in the world is a person without a dream” (P. 25). To him, without a vision, which is a clear picture of the future, life becomes an experiment and mediocrity will be the ally of such a life. In his words, mediocrity (quoting from John Mason) is “a region bordered on the North by Compromise, on the South by Indecision, on the East by Pastthinking, and on the West by lack of Vision” (p.63) It is unfortunate that several lives are characterized by all these negative forces – compromise, indecision, past thinking, and lack of vision – and so their pace in the journey of life is very slow, spending life merely toiling away but not make any headway.
To Dr. Myles, vision is both “a conception of where you need to be as inspired by God in your heart” and “a clear conception of something that is not yet a reality, but which can exist.” In other words, vision is a strong image of a preferable future. He asserts that the greatest gift God has given humans is not sight, but vision. It is, however, possible to have sight but no vision. Without doubt, The Principles and Power of Vision is a must read book for everyone who longs for a practicable format to fulfilling his/her God-given assignment on earth.
